He worried about his mother who had to work as a brick carrier on construction sites to make ends meet, and had nobody to take care of his little sister. Saroo imagines the fear and horror they must’ve felt when he disappeared, the sadness that perhaps they experienced every day he wasn’t with them. Lion: The Journey Home
I have no hesitation in HIGHLY recommending this book. He replayed everything he did and everywhere he went in his mind, so he wouldn’t forget. As soon as he woke up lost in Calcutta, he tried to replay his memories of accidentally falling asleep on a train so he might figure out where it came from. He hopped on every train he could find, but with no luck. His mum , had a violent childhood, but Dad, John Brierley, had a happy upbringing, which gave stability to the family. They were in complete agreement about what they wanted to do together.
After several close calls, he is eventually found and sent to an orphanage. Unable to find his family from his descriptions, he is adopted and sent to live his new life in Australia. Years later has an adult he attempts again to find the family he lost.

But inLion – intentionally or unintentionally – the childlike wonder and fear of a lost five-year-old matches the creative innocence of a foreign filmmaker. Even as Saroo is shown fascinated by orange kurta-clad saadhus at the Howrah Bridge, you can almost imagine the crew going starry-eyed behind the lens. At first, Peek was skeptical, he said this is only the 36th confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Kansas, and the first ever in a city -- Wichita.

First, I have to say that although I already knew the bones of the story, as so many potential readers may, it only made the reading that much more enjoyable. Ghost-writer Larry Buttrose isn’t listed on the cover although he’s credited “with Larry Buttrose” inside. An inspirational, true story, a life most of us can’t imagine – all this is the story of Saroo Brierley. A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. Slumdog Millionaire was criticised for looking at India through an orientalist gaze.

When I started reading the book, after the title attracted me to it, I was unaware of Saroo Brierley's true story. After finishing the book I discovered that the movie "Lion" with Nicole Kidman in his Australian mother's role was made. I realized for the first time how big his story really became.
Its no wonder how his story caught Hollywood´s eye and whose movie ended up as an Oscar nominee. Prior to starting reading this work, I had no idea that the movie Lion was based on this book . Heartfelt, profound and uplifting this was an incredible story. He also learns the fate of his brother Guddu, who was hit and killed by an oncoming train the night of his separation. Saroo's mother never gave up hope nor moved away from the village as she believed that one day her missing son would return home.

When Saroo gets separated at the train station from his brother, his life takes a dramatic turn. At just five years old, he finds himself alone in an unknown and crowded platform. While not constantly sniffling, he is wearing a poker face. Rooney Mara seems to be stuck in the meek character mode ofCarol , while playing Patel’s Indian food loving girlfriend. Essaying Patel’s mum is Nicole Kidman, who steals the show with the right amount of tears and adequate composure. Cleared payment cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab. As an adult, Saroo meets a fellow hotel-management student named Lucy, with whom he has a sexual relationship. They’re shown kissing and in bed together, clearly in a prelude to sex.
Saroo reveals that he is not from Calcutta and that he has been lost for more than twenty years, and his friends suggest he use Google Earth to search for his hometown in India. Saroo commences his search, but over time disconnects from Lucy and his family, overwhelmed by the thought of emotions his family must have gone through when he was missing. In rural India in the mid-1980s, the two brothers separated after Saroo, the younger boy, was instructed by 14 year old Guddu to wait for him inside the train station.

I did have a long distance trip that year – to Disneyland, my father, my older brother and me, but Calcutta is nothing like Disneyland, everyone spoke my language and money was not something I was concerned with. I was more concerned that my father didn’t know how to do pigtails. Sheru was his birth name meaning Lion in Hindi.. “From the moment you came into our lives, you were all that we could’ve hoped for,” says Sue. Saroo may not be able to, as he brags, lift everything. But what he lacks in stature and toughness, he more than makes up in emotional durability. Saroo survives his first night in Calcutta … and many, many nights afterward. It’s people, and Saroo has lost all that home is. One night, like most nights, Saroo begs his brother to let him come along.
